Turkish vocabulary in French-Ottoman Turkish pocket dictionary

In this study, Turkish vocabulary in French-Ottoman Turkish Pocket Dictionary, which was written by A. Calfa in 1865, an Ottoman citizen of Armenian origin, was discussed. The statements in twenty-four different thematic areas, in which the idioms, pattern expressions, dilemmas, and especially the noun words are used extensively, were examined according to their structure and origins, and Ottoman Turkish vocabulary, the quality of this vocabulary and the sources of the vocabulary were tried to be determined. It is claimed that Ottoman Turkish is a hybrid language in Turkish, Arabic and Persian terms in terms of vocabulary and grammar; vocabulary is an artificial language which is used only in literary and administrative fields, which is used by a narrow group, where words of noble words are mostly foreign words and Turkish language is pushed into the second plan. However, according to the Turkish vocabulary in the Calfa Dictionary, these claims do not reflect the truth. Ottoman Turkish is not a hybrid language consisting of Turkish, Arabic and Persian. Ottoman Turkish is not loaded with Arabic and Persian elements. The rate of words in the foreign terminology, which is seen as a foreign element in Ottoman Turkish, is only around 12%. Although Turkish is an agglutinating language, it has been tried to merge more words instead of word derivation by adding new words and terms needed in Ottoman Turkish. In Ottoman Turkish, the words included in the basic vocabulary are used in modern Turkish. In Ottoman Turkish, it is seen that some of the term meaningful words in various fields are not used in today's Turkish language, instead they are quoted from Western languages or new words created by the possibilities of language. Ottoman Turkish is a very rich and powerful language which is used both in speech and written language, is very busy and productive, among the few languages of the world in terms of vocabulary.
