Evalution of the attitudes of hospitalizet parents towards rational drug use

The aim of study was investigation the attitudes of parents whose children were hospitalized towards rational drug use. The study was conducted as a descriptive study with parents of hospitalized children between the ages of 0-12 years at Harran University Research and Application Hospital in Sanliurfa city. Study data were collected between January 1 and March 31, 2020. The population of the study consisted of 918 parents whose children aged between 0-12 and were hospitalized (undergoing treatment) in pediatric clinics (pediatric neurology clinic, pediatric hematology and oncology clinic, pediatric surgery clinic, general pediatric clinic). Sample selection was not used in the study however, the study was conducted with 205 parents who met the selection criteria and volunteered to participate in the study. "Parent and Child Introductory Information Form" and "Parental Attitude Scale Towards Rational Use of Drugs (PASTRDU)" were used for data collection. The 'IBM SPSS.23' was used in the analysis of the research data. In the analysis of the study, the T test was used in independent samples and 'one-way Anova' was used for comparing normally distributed variables. Mean score of PASTRDU was (143.83 ± 16.54), correct and conscious use sub-test mean score was (108.96 ± 13.01), and effective and safe use sub-test mean score was (34.87 ± 5.98). In the study, it was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the average score of "PASTRDU" in the families whose children received regular health monitoring, the families who used non-prescribed medications for their children. Moreover, parents' working status, parents' health insurance type, parents' educational status, economic level of the parents, the age groups of the child, and the place of the first application in case of a child's complaint/illness occurred, the place where the parents have lived for the longest time, in the total number of children the parents have, the number of children between the ages of 0-12 including the children participating in the study, and the 0-12 age group of children that the parents had also showed a statistically significant difference. These results show that parents' has a lack of knowledge about rational drug use and some variables may influence the rational drug use.
