Collocational errors among Iraqi EFL learners writings

This thesis entitled "Collocational Errors Among Iraqi EFL Learners Writings" sets out to describe the place of collocational knowledge in language skills by referring to the relevant literature. More specifically, this study seeks answer to the question "What are the most frequent collocation errors among Iraqi EFL students?". This paper starts with an introduction to the concept of collocation along with subsections on the purpose and significance of the study. It is followed by an ample literature review which elaborates on the definition of collocations, their types and previous studies on collocation in learning English. The findings demonstrated that low collocation frequency and the impact of L1 were the two main reasons of the participants' collocational errors. Mutual Information and the frequency of collocation components were found to be ineffective in generating correct collocations because they did not result in collocation errors. The implications of these findings for teaching are then covered. Furthermore, recommendations for ways that researchers and material designers will be able to create better language teaching materials with regard to collocations, taking into account major constituents that frequently reason difficulty in collocations, were made., this paper ends with a discussion and concluding remarks summarizing the whole subject briefly and giving a concise meaning of the thesis.
