Abstract (EN)

Objective: Cell phones emit electromagnetic field in three main frequencies (900, 1800, and 2100 Mhz). Cell phones using 3G tehnology emits magnetic field in 1800 and 2100 Mhz. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of magnetic fields emitted by cell phones on nerve healing. Method: Our study is planned on 28 male rats weighing 250-300 gr. Rats randomized into four groups each with seven rats. Only sciatic nerve was incised in Group 1 (sham group) and there was no exposure to electromagnetic field. Sciatic nerve was incised and rats were exposed to 900, 1800, and 2100 Mhz electromagnetic field in Group 2, Group 3, and Group 4, respectively. At the end of the 30th day all rats had walking test and analysis on certain track and sciatic nerve biopsies were obtained from coaptation area. All rats were sacrificed by cardiac puncture. Histopathologic evaluation of biopsies was done by electron and light microscopes in Dicle University Central Research Laboratory. Results and walking test and analysis were evaluated statistically. Results: Interdigital distances and pace distance of non-operated and operated foot measured in centimeters and grouped. Median and standard deviation values calculated. No statistically significant results were obtained. Histopathologic findings obtained by electron and light microscopes evaluated statistically significant result was found in terms of hyperplasia, dilatation, hemorrhage, hyalinization, and vacuolization. These values were not statistically significant. Conclusion: In lights of findings of this study after 30 days, we found that electromagnetic waves emitted by cell phones don't have significant effect on sciatic nerve healing.
