Abstract (EN)

Determination of hematological reference values in 18-65 year old healthy adults in Adıyaman Objective: Reference intervals have an important place in making decisions. Although the reference interval recommended by the manufacturer is available, this range does not accurately reflect the reference interval of the population in which it is used, because the reference intervals provided by the manufacturers cannot explain variations caused by race, diet and lifestyle. Therefore, each laboratory should set its own reference interval values. In this study, using hospital data we aimed to determine the reference intervals of four hematologic parameters (WBC, RBC, HGB, and PLT) by using indirect methods (with Bhattacharya and indirect nonparametric methods). Materials and methods: In this study, a total of 21719 patients, 8726 men and 12993 women who were admitted Adiyaman University Training and Research Hospital between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2016 were included and four parameters of these patients which were studied in the biochemistry laboratory were obtained by using Information Management and Automation (HBYOS) records. The patient data included in the study were obtained from the automation system (KarMed Patient Management Information System) of the hospital and transferred to Microsoft Office Excel program. Prior to analysis, histograms were drawn for both genders and extreme values were determined by using SPSS 22 program. To discard extreme values, a Dixon rule in the XLSTAT program and a stem-and-leaf plot chart in the SPSS 22 program were used. The reference intervals were then calculated using the Bhattacharya method and the indirect nonparametric method. Findings: In indirect nonparametric method, reference intervals for WBC were 5-12.1 (103/μL) for males and 4.8-11.4 (103 / μL) for females. Reference intervals for RBC were 4.58-6.2 (106/μL) for men and 4.16-5.47 (106/μL) for women. Reference intervals for HGB were 13.65-17.82 (g/dL) for males and 10.64-15.11 (g/dL) for females. Reference intervals for PLT were 148-339 (103/μL) for males and 172-374 (103/ μL) for females. The confidence interval for the indirect nonparametric methods in the study is %90. In Bhattacharya method, Reference intervals for WBC were 3.21-11.84 (103 / μL) for men and 3.41-13.5 (103 / μL) for women. Reference intervals for RBC were 3.76-6.61 (106/μL) for men and 3.42-5.73 (106/μL) for women. Reference intervals for HGB were 12.09-18.52 (g / dL) for males and 9.53-16.22 (g / dL) for females. Reference intervals for PLT were 119-394 (103/μL) for men and 124-445 (103/μL) for women. The confidence interval for the Bhattacharya method in study is %95. Conclusion: In our study, the reference values we found with the indirect nonparametric method were closer to the reference values of the firm than the reference values we found with Bhattacharya method.
