Evaluation of the relationship between morphological measurements of the knee and anterior cruciate ligament injuries along with meniscus injuries

Ligamentum cruciatum anterius and meniscus injuries are common pathologies. As a result of the high incidence of this sports-related injuries, it accounts for 40-50% of all ligament-related knee injuries. In our study, knee magnetic resonance imaging records of 200 individuals diagnosed with ligamentum cruciatum anterius injury and 110 individuals reported as normal knee (a total of 310 individuals) were analyzed. The images were also examined in terms of meniscus injury; They were divided into two groups; isolated ligamentum cruciatum anterius injury and ligamentum cruciatum anterius and meniscus combined injury groups. These groups are also devided within themselves. According to the degree of ligamentum cruciatum anterius injury, they were divided into subgroups as 1st degree, 2nd degree and 3rd degree injury groups. Measurements of bone structures that were presumed to be risk factors for ligamentum cruciatum anterius and meniscus injury were evaluated. These measurements were compared statistically between the two main groups and all subgroups with the control group. In our study, condylus medialis width, condylus lateralis width, bikondilar width, eminentia intercondylaris width, tibia width, patellar length, ligamentum patellae length, patella facies articularis angle, sulcus trochlearis angle values were significantly higher in both isolated ligamentum cruciatum anterius injuries and combined injury of ligamentum cruciatum anterius and meniscus. Furthermore, fossa intercondylaris shape index, fossa intercondylaris index, tibial medial slope, sulcus trochlearis depth, facies patellaris asymmetry, sulcus trochlearis and tuberositas tibia distance, and patellar tilt values were significantly lower in both isolated ligamentum cruciatum anterius injuries and combined injury of ligamentum cruciatum anterius and meniscus. We think that by evaluating these mesurements in daily clinical practice, it can be determined whether the patient is at risk for ligamentum cruciatum anterius and meniscus injuries.
