Özet (EN)

Fish are one of the biota species often used as an environmental bioindicator to monitor a level of pollution in the marine environment. The levels of PCBs in two fish species from the İzmir Bay was investigated. A total of 624 individuals of different fish species were sampled by trawling in İzmir Bay (Foca-Gediz, Uzunada, Gulbahce) in 2010,2011,2012,2013. The concentrations of PCBs in all samples ranged between bdl-34.3 nanogram in gram (dry weight) from all sites during sam-pling periods. The highest levels of PCBs were found in Gülbahçe for D. annularis and M. barbatus 2010 and 2011, respectively. PCB153 was the most frequently compound in both fish species during sampling periods. PCA analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation of the determined varia-bles in fish species. According to PCA analysis, the PCBs are not correlated with fish length. According to one-way ANOVA test, significant temporal variations were generally observed for PCBs, while non significant spatial variations were found among sampling sites. 6 PCB congeners were found as 0.59-6.64 nanogram in gram (wet weight, ww) and compared with iPCB6 limits of 75 nanogram in gram (ww) set by the Environmental Food Safety Authority. Accordingly, fish samples analysed did not exceed the safe limits of iPCB6 set by EU. The Estimated Daily Intake of 6 PCB congeners by the people were below the tolerable daily intake (TDI, 10 nanogram in kilogram bw/d) recommended by WHO (2003) suggesting this intake would not pose adverse effect to inhabitants of İzmir.
