Assessment of knowledge on postpartum hemorrhage and care among midwifery and nursing studenrs

Aim: The present study assesses the level of knowledge of student midwives and nurses on postpartum hemorrhage and care. Materials and Methods: The descriptive design study included a study population of nursing and midwifery students studying at a foundation university, while the study sample consisted of 164 students who were present at the school between March 2 and 6, 2020, and who agreed to participate in the research. The study data were collected using a data collection form developed by the researchers. The Data Collection Form consisted of nine items to determine the descriptive characteristics of the students and 20 items to as certain their level of knowledge on postpartum hemorrhage and care. Results: According to the study findings, the meanage of the students was 22.4±1.3years, 79.9% of students were female and 20.1% were male, 82.9% were nursing students and 17.1% were midwifery students. The total score of the students from the Data Collection Form regarding postpartum hemorrhage and care was 13.2±2.4. Among the students, 68.9% were able to accurately define the amount of postpartum hemorrhage, while 75.6% were unable to accurately define early and late postpartum hemorrhage. Uterine atony was accurately stated by 54.3% of the students to be the most common cause of postpartum hemorrhage. Conclusion:The midwifery students had a higher total knowled gescorethanthe nursing students. Gender, graduation school type, internship in gynecology and obstetricsclinics, observing a patient with active bleeding in clinical practice and having intervened in a patient with bleeding were found to positively affect the students' knowledge scores on postpartum hemorrhage and care.
