The effect of using eye mask and ear plug applications in coronary i̇ntensive care unit patients on sleep quality

This study is made for aim to investigate the effect of eye mask and earplug application in Coronary Intensive Care Unit patients on sleep quality. The study is designed model of pre test-post test and it's randomized controlled clinical trial. Power analysis was performed to determine number of participants in this study. In accordance with power analysis 30 patients were assigned experimental group, 30 patients were assigned control group and the study is actualized 60 patients. In addition to standard nursing care in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit, a night eye mask and earplug were applied to the patients in the experimental group. Only the standard nursing care was given to the patients in the control group. Patient Identification Form and Richards- Campbell Sleep Scale were used for data collection. The data was analysed with descriptive statistics, independent sample t test and paired t test. The mean pre test sleep quality score of the experimental group was 197.83±113.614, and the mean post test score was 385.67 ± 64.08. The mean pre test sleep quality score of the control group patients was 178.83 ± 116.890 and the mean post test score was 244.33 ± 122.94. A statictically significant difference was found between the pre test post test sleep quality scores of the patients in experimental group (t=-9.335, p=0.000) and the pre test post test sleep quality scores of the patients in control group (t=-2.730, p=0.011). When the mean post test sleep quality scores of the experimental and control group patients were compared, it's determined that statistically significant difference between the groups (t=-5.584, p=0.000). As a result of this study, it's determined that using eye mask and earplug applications in Coronary Intensive Care Unit patients affect positively on sleep quality.
