Abstract (EN)

This dissertation investigates how fasting during Ramadan affects the well-being of people with multiple sclerosis (MS). The purpose of this research is to investigate whether fasting during Ramadan has an impact on multiple sclerosis symptoms and, if so, how sociodemographic factors and dietary changes during Ramadan may contribute to these effects. Data were collected through a questionnaire posted on social media platforms. The potential health outcomes between Turkish and Arab MS patients, the importance of dietary changes, and the effects of fasting on MS symptoms are the topics of the study. The results of this study suggest that fasting during Ramadan does not have a significant impact on multiple sclerosis symptoms. However, changes in diet during fasting could affect symptoms, so patients should be aware of triggering foods. Gender or nationality did not appear to play a role in how fasting affected health. Further research on the effects of Ramadan fasting on MS patients is needed, and the study underscores the importance of talking with a neurologist before making the decision to fast. Overall, this study underscores the need for MS patients to consult their healthcare providers before making dietary changes during the month of fasting. Keywords: multiple sclerosis, Ramadan, fasting, Arab countries, Turkey.
