Determining the problems of plastic arts education in faculties of education and a suggested

ABSTRACT This research was conducted to determine the problems of the departments of plastic arts education of the faculties of education in Turkey and to develop a model in which these problems have been eliminated.This is a Survey type of research, and it was done on a sample group of 69 faculty members and 205 senior students in the plastic arts programs at Gazi Faculty of Education of Gazi University, Atatürk Faculty of Education of Marmara University and Buca Faculty of Education of Dokuz Eylül University. The data were collected through Likert type questionnaires. A preliminary questionnaire consisting of 11 questions related to the estimated problems was administered to a group of specialists to test the validity of thequestionnaires. In addition, the validity of the questionnaires was tested with the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) program, and the Alpha Reliability Coefficients were determined to be.96 for the questionnaire administered to the faculty members and.90 for the one administered to the students. The data were analyzed and transformed into the form of tables using the statistical techniques Frequency, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), t-Test and Chi- Square. The significance levels of the differences between groups were determined with Scheffe and Duncan tests.Furthermore, the comparative analysis of the "perceptions" and "expectations" of the faculty members and of the students was made through t-Test based on the collected data. By making use of the data obtained through this research, a model in which the discerned problems have been eliminated was also developed. The data in the studies "The Reconstruction of Universities" and "Evaluation of Universities (Accreditation)", both of which were collaboratively initiated and carried out by The Higher Education Council of Turkey (YÖK) and Word Bank in 1998, were made use of, and the research was expanded so that it would also cover the results of the two studies mentioned above. The data of this research and of the "Reconstruction" and "Accreditation" studies were comparatively evaluated; and finally considering the problems which are likely to exist, a "suggested model" was developed in line with the "Standards for Teacher Education in Turkey" determined by YÖK.
