Abstract (EN)

It is well known that Ebû'l Izz El Cezerî (Al Jazari), who is the wonder of the time (Bedi'ûz-Zaman) was born in 1153 (GC) or 548 (IC, HC) in North Mesopotamia at Cezire (Cizre) region and died in 1233 (GC) or 630 (IC, HC). He was buried in Cizre city center in Turkey. He had worked as chief engineer for 25 years for Sultan of Artuqid in Diyarbakir. Al Jazari was working on water robots and designing many mechanical devices. He was a genius scientist, who produces and sells his designs. Therefore, he is well known as the father of cybernetics and mechanical engineer in the current literature. However, the robotic devices he produced were working with hydropower or used for water supply. Therefore, herein, Al Jazari is introduced as a "great water engineer". Within the scope of this thesis, following to his brief life story, the designs reported in his book famous as "El-Câmi' Beyne'l-'İlm Ve'l-Amel En-Nâfi' Fi Es-Sınaâ'ti'ül-Hiyel (The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices)" have been criticized to present extraordinary level of his scientific accomplishment. Al Jazari can be considered both as an inventor and as a technology and production person, who converts science to technological production, provides benefits and sells what they do. This feature is emphasized in this thesis. Furthermore, the Al Jazari's work namely "Two Floating Variable Fountain" was examined in detail and technical drawings and a prototype of the device were produced. Unfortunately, this scientist has not been sufficiently involved in the national and/or international literature. For this reason, the title "lost genius in history of science" has been adopted for him. There are numerous repetitions and conflicting information on existing websites and in limited literature. Thus, this science and technology person, who lived centuries ego, were introduced to today's scientists, the most accurate information about him have been concluded from numerous sources and he has been replaced unbiased in the history and society of science. It is hoped that new horizons in "developing of different design and mechanical systems by utilizing water energy" will be provided for contemporary and especially young scientists. The thesis consists of six chapters. Following to the introduction chapter, the life story of Al Jazari is presented. The scientific accomplishment of Al Jazari is handled and detailed in Third chapter according to his book as well as with the light of the national and/or international publications. Chapter Four talks in detail about "Two Floating Variable Fountain" which is a farmhouse design of Al Jazari. The thesis is concluded in the Chapter Five. The references are listed in the last chapter.
