Abstract (EN)

In this study, the giving births have been followed at the Research Hospital of Fırat University, the State Hospital and the Social Insurance Hospital for two months in order to observe the mothers who located in Elazığ center and the information whether they were given or not on the nursing by the related health personnel. In this period, totally 600 births had been given and 336 of them had been observed for this study. In order to have the informmation of how the health personnel approached to the mother, a questionnaire has been applied by talking face to face with the mothers who gave birth. In preparing the questionnaire form, It has been benefitted from the public - declaration published by WHOXUNICEF in 1989 under the title of "The Private Role and the Birth Service" which covers the keeping, the encouraging and me supporting of breast feeding. Whereas 33.9 % of 336 mothers have been informed on nursing and breast feeding, 24.4 % of 336 mothers have not been informed. 41.1 % of them were well - informed because of their previos births. While mothers had had the 50.% of the knowledge oh breast-feeding and nursing from media devices like T.V, magazine etc., a small rate of them (10.5 %) told that they had been informed by a doctor or other health personnel. 61.4 % of the mothers who were informed on the breast - feeding before the birth have been considering colostrum useful, but 80.5 % of the uninformed mothers have had no comment. The delivering rate of colostrum is 83.5 % at the Research Hospital, 56 % at the State Hospital and 55.3 % at. the Social Insurance Hospital. This meaningful difference observed among the hospitals has been considered unimportant due to the mothers' education level. 63It was observed that the rate of the mothers' traditions related to the nursing had varied according to their education level. It was found out that 38.4 % of the mothers who were unliterate had such traditions while 100 % of the highly educated ones did not have such traditions. Only 9.8 % of the mothers have been encouraged on nursing by health personnel. That distribution according to the hospitals is 18.6 % at the Research Hospital, 8.8 % at the State Hospital and 3.5 % at the Social Insurance Hospital. Consequently, It was seen that there was a significant relationship between nursing and mother's level of educational level. However, It has also been observed that nothing has been done for making pregnants well educated, on nursing at the hospitals in Elazığ. As a matter of fact much more work can be done by health instutitions when mothers' educational level is taken into consideration. Nursing can be spread by giving on the desired information and supporting for the mother candidates by the health Institutions. 64
