Critical discourse analysis: The ideological presentation of the news of the yellow vests movement in France in Cumhuriyet and Yeni Safak newspapers

In this thesis, critical discourse analysis has been done. The study focuses on the ideological presentation of the Yellow Vests Movement, which started in France in November 2018, in the newspapers of Cumhuriyet and Yeni Şafak. Related news has been analyzed according to Teun Adrian van Dijk's "macro-microstructure" model. On a theoretical basis, critical discourse analysis and van Dijk's approach to critical discourse analysis were described. After the method was explained, analysis started. In the analysis, it was observed that van Dijk's critical discourse analysis approach is suitable for the analysis of the Turkish news. In the study, it was determined that both newspapers produced an ideology in the line with their own ideological lines. As a result, it has been observed that Cumhuriyet newspaper generally tries to include the actions and statements of the Yellow Vests. On the other hand, it has been seen that the news discourse of the Yeni Şafak newspaper is generally based on the opposition of Emmanuel Macron. Cumhuriyet newspaper took a closer stance to the Yellow Vests Movement than Yeni Şafak newspaper. But also Cumhuriyet newspaper could not avoid making an ideological presentation. It was determined that both newspapers produced ideology in their news discourses. Thus, news discourse has been determined to be ideological. The fact that news discourse is ideological is problematic and this can be manipulated by power. Hereby, news discourse becomes more important than the event's itself. Two different ideological productions emerging in the same event axis can be shown as a reflection of this situation. As a result, this study revealed that ideological production is fixed but its form is different in the news discourse.
