Effect of endotrakeal entubation and LMA types on the voice quality

To secure, control and continue the airway is one of the basic tasks of an anesthesiologist and one of the indispensible principals of anesthesiology. Endotracheal intubation and laryngeal mask airways, which are being used to summon these purposes, can cause various laryngeal symptoms and changes of the acoustical characteristics of the voice in the postoperative period.In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of endotracheal intubation, classic LMA, proseal LMA ve I gel LMA on laryngeal symptoms and on acoustic analysis parameters of the voice.80 patients undergoing lower abdomen and extremity surgery, which do not effect the formation of the voice, were included. A clinical survey sheet, that includes questions about hoarseness, globus pharyngeus, need to clearing pipe, sore throat, loss of voice, unpleasant voice and cracking of voice, was answered by the patients preoperatively, 2 hours postoperatively and 24 hours postoperatively. All patients received acoustic analysis in an isolated room in the ENT-polyclinic. Acoustic analysis included parameters of basic frequency, jitter, shimmer, HNR and NNE.In the group of endotracheal intubation there was clinical significancy on hoarseness and statistical significancy on need to clearing pipe. In the group of classic LMA there was a statistical significant increase of need to clearing pipe. These clinical evaluations existed in the early postoperative period and were decreased to normal values at the 24th hour postoperatively. In acoustic analysis, only the jitter parameter in the proseal LMA group was significantly changed at the 2nd hour postoperatively. Other acoustic parameters had no significant changes.In conclusion, we think that endotracheal intubation and classic LMA could have effects on voice functions in the early postoperative period and that the new developed LMAs, especially gel structured laryngeal mask airways, which are not dilated with air, had minimal effects on voice functions and laryngeal complaints.KEYWORDS; Endotracheal intubation, laryngeal mask airway , hoarseness, sore throat, acoustic analysis
