The evaluation of the news related to handicapped within the context of human rights-based approach to journalism

In this study, the presentation of the news in media related to handicapped is evaluated within the context of Human Rights-Based Approach to Journalism. In the study, the history of the news is mentioned in order for the Human Rights-Based Approach to Journalism to be understood and the basic elements of journalism shaped by the concept of the liberal press are focused. Afterwards, the alternative media are explained with the critism brought to the perception of traditional news and the Human Rights-Based Approach to Journalism is being dealt in detail. In the study, having decided to be the subject of the research, to have a better understanding of the handicapped, their view is taken into account and the concept of disability is handled with the human rights and media. In-depth interviews with the handicapped, it is better understood that the views of handicapped and human rights-based approach to journalism are matched up together. In a particular time, with the examination of the national newspapers Hurriyet, Posta, Sabah, Zaman, it is seen that totally 44 disability news has taken place. In these newspapers, the percentage of the disability news considering the general news is less than %1. During the same time period, there was found no news in www.bianet.org which is regarded as an alternative media. While "rights violation report" sample event which kept the country agenda for a long time and on which newspapers focused largely was not presented appropriate according to human rights-based approach to journalism in general media while it is focused appropriately according to human rights-based approach to journalism in www.bianet.org which is defined as an alternative media. Lastly, it is seen that the news related to handicapped taken place in www.engellihaberleri.com, the internet news site of the handicapped, are also mostly not presented appropriately according to human rights-based approach to journalism.
