Abstract (EN)

Background and aims: Celiac disease is a multisystemic disease of overreactivity towards gluten present in grain and grain products on individuals with genetic predisposition, accompanied by immunological mechanisms, characterized with inflammation of intestinal mucosa and submucosa, often proceeding with malabsorbtion and clinical findings are improved when gluten is taken away from the diet. Especially in advanced age at the forefront of non-gastrointestinal manifestations of atypical forms. Celiac disease may be presented with extraintestinal manifestations including neurological findings. Ataxia, epilepsy and neurological symptoms of celiac disease, peripheral neuropathies, especially the distribution is quite broad. Occipital lobe epilepsy reported an increased incidence of celiac disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalance of celiac dissease in children with epilepsy who had occipital lobe epilepic actvity at EEG examination. Materials and Methods: Case study as a group of 90 children with epilepsy, occipital lobe epileptic activity detected, the control group of 100 healtly children were included. With the selection of cases, patients with overt celiac disease were excluded. The control group was not attempting EEG. Results: Screening for celiac disease in the control group of 100 healthy children were none of the positive value of antitissue transglutaminase. The group with the occipital lobe epileptic activity was two antitissue transglutaminase positive in 90 patients. Seroprevalence in this group was 1/45. These two patients were diagnosed with celiac disease, the process of endoscopic biopsy of duodenum. The prevalence of celiac disease in this group was higher than that of the normal population. Conclusions: Epileptic activity over the occipital lobe epilepsy in children with diagnosed, celiac disease screening is recommended.
