Abstract (EN)

Throughout the historical development of Turkish, one of the key elements that enrich its vocabulary has been the derivational SUFFIXES that give new forms and meanings to words. Among these, the SUFFIXES +A-, +DA- and +lA- have been widely used over the centuries, taking on different functions and meanings. From Old Turkish to the present-day dialects of Turkey Turkish, these SUFFIXES have undergone changes in their forms, meanings, and productivity. This study examines how these SUFFIXES have been used from Old Turkish to modern dialects, which semantic roles they have taken, and in what ways they differ from one another. The data were gathered by examining major written sources of Old Turkish, such as the Orkhon Inscriptions, Uighur texts, and works from the Karakhanid period. Words containing the +A-, +DA- and +lA- SUFFIXES in these texts were identified, and modern dialect data were reviewed using the Derleme Sözlüğü and the Türkçe Sözlük. In this study, the occurrences of verbs derived with the SUFFIXES +A-, +DA-, and +lA- were examined in historical texts and dictionaries. In total, 3322 examples were recorded. However, after eliminating repeated forms of the same verb across different sources and their variants, the net number of verbs was determined to be 3322. The continued use of these Old Turkish SUFFIXES in today's dialects demonstrates that the historical structure of the language can still be observed in the present. In conclusion, this thesis presents the historical development of the +A-, +DA-, and +lA- SUFFIXES, the changes they have undergone in form and meaning, and their functional roles in Turkish. The findings offer important insights into the word formation system of Turkish, both in the past and in the present.
