Investigation of the Effects of Different Chelation Agents on Root Canal Dentin Microhardness and Surface Roughness The success of endodontic treatment depends on the preparation method, adequate irrigation, disinfection, and three-dimensional obturation of the root canal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of four different chelation solutions on root canal dentin microhardness and surface roughness. In this study, 60 maxillary incisor teeth were utilized. All the crowns of the teeth were separated from their roots at the level of the cemanto-enamel junction by a diamond bur. The roots were divided longitudinally into two segments with a diamond saw. The samples were horizontally mounted in auto-polymerizing acrylic resin and the dentin surfaces were ground. The samples were divided into four groups and the microhardness and surface roughness values were measured before the chelating process. The following four treatments were applied to the samples for 120 seconds: 17% Gel EDTA solution, 17% Liquid EDTA, 20% Citric acid, and 7% Maleic acid. After the samples were treated with the chelating solutions, microhardness and surface roughness values were measured again. The results were analyzedwith One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and significant differences were found between groups (p<0.05). According to microhardness values, 17% Liquid EDTA and 17% Gel EDTA reduced the microhardness of dentin less than the other chelating agents, and there was no significant difference between those two treatments. The 20% Citric acid solution reduced the dentin microhardness values much more than both the EDTA solutions. The 7% Maleic acid solution reduced the dentin microhardness values more than the other chelating solutions. According to surface roughness values, 7% Maleic acid increased the dentin surface roughness more than the other chelating agents. The 20% Citric acid and 17% Gel EDTA solutions increased the dentin surface roughness less than maleic acid solution, and there was no significant difference those two solutions: 17% Liquid EDTA solution increased the dentin surface roughness less than the other solutions.
