Abstract (EN)
This study aims to assess the change of the levels of fat acid, cholesterol and vitamin (ADEK) after inhaling atmospheric oxygen in tissues like brain, gill and muscleof Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) which has an auxiliary respiratory systemannexed to air sac, pharynx and gill sac. Authorization for the experiments was given by Ahi Evran University?s Committee for Ethical Treatment of Animals on 04.07.2011with protocol number 2011/02. The animals were picked from Ceyhan River basin and divided into two groups: The ones kept in natural habitat as a control group (6 in total) and the ones made live in atmospheric environment for 12 hours (6 in total). Various tissues were removed and these tissues were analyzed fort he purpose of this study. To find out the level of fat acids Gas Chromatography (GC) device was used. For measuring the vitamin and the cholesterol levels High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) machine was employed. At the end of analysis process, findings are as follows. The levels of stearic and arachidonic acids in atmospheric group?s are (18:0) and (20:4 n6) respectively in all tissues. Docosahexaenoic acid (22: 6n3) decreased in muscle and brain tissues compared to control group?s ( p<0,05). Linoleic acid (18:2 n6c) and alpha-linolenic acid (18:3, n3) increased in all tissues. Docosapentaenoic acid (22:5,n3) increased in gill and muscle tissues and palmitoleic acid (16:1 n7) increased in brain and muscle tissues compared to control group ( p<0,05). Eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5,n3) levels did not change much in all tissues (p>0.05). Quantity of ergesterol decreased in all three tissues, ?-Tokoferol diminished in gill and brain tissues, and finally ß-Sitosterol and retinol lessened in brain tissue compared to control group (p<0,05). K1, K2 and D2 vitamins, stigmasterol and retinol augmented in gill and muscle tissues compared to control group (p<0,05). It is observed that the muscle tissue?s level of cholesterol had risen in atmospheric group compared to control group (p<0,05), however it is not possible to say there is a meaningful divergence between the levels of gill and brain tissues results for both groups (p>0,05). Consequently, we can say that in certain period of their lives Clarias gariepinus(Burchell, 1822) can use atmospheric oxygen and they can tolerate inhalation of atmospheric oxygen by metabolic adjustments. Thus, contrary to their natural habitat in hyperoxidic environments their fat acid, cholesterol and vitamin levels change meaningfully.
