Abstract (EN)
The Future of Blockchain Technology in Construction Supply Chain A Survey in Iraq Construction is one of the most prominent industries globally due to a record of profits and several innovative initiatives. To sustain this trend, we argue that disruptive technologies may play a significant role. Being one of the disruptive technologies, blockchain (BcT) can help build resilience into supply chains in construction industry. In developing countries such as Iraq, high numbers of investors are looking for new technologies to increase profit and make their work more sustainable. It is argued that BcT provides any supply chain with greater transparency, immutability, increased efficiency, better and improved security and in turn, more profits and safety. Construction supply chains in Iraq have failed to develop for last few years, and suffer from many problems such as financial, With this in mind, this study aims to investigate the possibilities of introducing BcT to the construction supply chain. To this end, a survey method is adopted, and a questionnaire was developed to scrutinize construction companies located in Iraq for their BcT awareness and tendency to implement it. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the basic features of the data gathered in this study, which provides simple summaries about the sample and the measures. Together with simple graphical figures, they formed the basis of our analysis. The results of the survey showed that no company has implemented BcT in their construction supply chains in Iraq yet. The results also indicated that "Scalability" and "Support and documentation." are the most important barriers that impede blockchain adoption. These barriers hinder and impact businesses decision to establish a BcT-enabled construction supply chain. Finally, the results revealed that the most suitable use of BcT in construction supply chain is payment management and construction procurement. This study will demonstrate the possibilities of introducing BcT technology to developing countries and examine the extent to which construction industry workers understand its importance in the supply chain. The study will also contribute to giving an insight on the future of BcT usage in Iraq. We argue that the findings of this study will help decision makers develop their plans with respect to the possible BcT investments in developing countries such as Iraq.
