The vocabulary of barak dialects in Gaziantep

The speech language that shows phonetic and morphological differences from the language it belongs to and can only be used in a certain region is called a dialect. Dialect research constitutes an important part of language studies. Vocabulary studies revealed as a result of dialect research are equally important. This study includes the vocabulary elements of the Barak Turkmen people living in the districts of Oğuzeli, Nizip, and Karkamış in the Gaziantep province. From Barak Turkmens residing in the centers and villages of the three districts, and records were taken. From these recordings, elements carrying vocabulary characteristics have been transcribed into writing. The study consists of an introduction, conclusion, and four sections. The first section covers the history of the Gaziantep province and the Baraks, as well as the studies conducted on them. In the second section, first, information is provided about the definition and scope of vocabulary. Then, the classification of the vocabulary of the Gaziantep Barak dialect is presented. The questions directed to the source individuals and the information about the settlements where the compilations were made to determine the vocabulary are also included in this section. The third section covers the vocabulary elements identified through the compilation method. In the fourth section, there is a dictionary containing the equivalents of the concepts that carry the characteristic features of the regional dialect, prepared based on the vocabulary elements. The aim of this study is to facilitate the preservation of the Gaziantep Barak dialect vocabulary by documenting it in writing, as there is a possibility of disappearance or oblivion due to various reasons over time. In order to clearly reveal the vocabulary elements recorded through the compilation method, questions were directed to the source individuals from a prepared pool of questions. Care was taken to ensure that the questions were appropriate for the source person. In the conclusion section of the study, detailed frequency of use and distribution graphs of the elements contained in the compiled Gaziantep Barak dialect vocabulary are shown.
