Abstract (EN)
It well-known that Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil has more than one hundred stories, but apart from those, he has eight novels: Sefile (1885, tefrika), Nemide (1889), Bir Ölünün Defteri (1889), Ferdi ve Şürekâsı (1894), Mai ve Siyah(1898), Aşk-ı Memnu (1900), Kırık Hayatlar (1924), and Nesl-i Ahir (1909). Also, he put forward many works, such as prose poetry, theater play, and history of literature. As a versatile author, Uşaklıgil, did not remain the outside of contemporary political life his period. Together with his two works such as Kırk Yıl (1936) and Saray ve Ötesi (1940), which reflect the currents of his period and shed light on the sociology and the historicity, there are newspapers he published throughout his life. With respect to "Thinking an author as a part of his/her environment" which is adopted by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar as a critique method and to the question of how the author is involved in social processes, these two books cannot be ignored. The both novels and stories of the author has been associated with the issues such as "İstanbul", "Woman", "Child", "Family", and "Marriage"; as well as they have been reviewed as a part of comparative literature. These reviews, nevertheless, reveals the necessity for broader works about Uşaklıgil's novels and stories. One of the critiques released by Zeynep Uysal recently on his novels, "Metruk Ev", has filled such a gap to a large extent. Zeynep Uysal, in her work, put forward not only fictional evaluation of the novels but also the changing literature perception, the crisis, and the dismay of the period. I should admit that I have benefited from her work, shedding light on my view very much, while writing this thesis. My purpose, in the thesis, is not to seek out each single affect but to bring forward what they point out, as well as considering the texts, converted into aesthetic object by Halit Ziya, as sociological works. "Love", "Unhappiness", "Loneliness", "Hopelessness", "Curiosity", "Dispossession", and "To sacrifice oneself", which constitutes the primary parts of the author's works, are not basically components which "gained only ground." Rather, I will try to establish how they emerge. After all of this, Uşaklıgil's novels will bring about the themes, worthwhile to be read, to be examined, and to rethink from various perspectives.
