Poetics of remembering: A phenomenological approach to memory and cinema as a research

This study considers memory and cinema as two different ways of approaching the temporal aspects of things in the world and making time visible. Under the guidance of the phenomenological method, it tries to understand memory by starting from the action that created it, remembering. This work deals with memory from the finite body that traditional ontology leaves implicit. In memory studies, memory is generally considered on the basis of space, within the framework of the problem of knowledge and representation. However, this study deals with memory on a temporal and thus experiential basis. Modern cinema is assumed to be the possibility of memory to be grasped on a bodily basis. This study aims to show that modern cinema, which derives time from image rather than movement in space, has a special place to be considered in memory studies and to announce the possibilities of looking at cinema with the phenomenological method. In this way, it is asked what the film, which is attributed a bodily existence and therefore a temporal consciousness, offers to discover about memory. Six films, which are examples of modern cinema, are analyzed within the framework of the concepts of memory and nostalgia, with a phenomenological approach.
