Abstract (EN)

Cystatin C is considered an important marker for the detection of renal dysfunction. The aim of this study was to determine cystatin C levels in hemodialysis patients and to investigate the relationship between cystatin C levels and oxidant-antioxidant status and inflammation. The study groups consisted of 20 hemodialysis patients and 20 healthy controls. Blood samples were obtained from the control group and from the hemodialysis group before hemodialysis. Serum cystatin C, TAC, TOS, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-18 levels were analyzed by ELISA, CRP and some biochemical parameters were analyzed by autoanalyser. Cystatin C, TOS, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-18 and CRP levels of the hemodialysis group were significantly higher than the control group (p <0.001, p <0.001, p <0.001, p <0.001, p <0.05, p <0.05, respectively). In hemodialysis patients, there was no correlation between cystatin C and oxidative stress parameters TAC, TOS and inflammation biomarkers TNF-α, IL-6, IL-18 and CRP. As a result; oxidative stress and inflammation were increased in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. Because of this oxidative stress and inflammation, there is a need for new studies on hemodialysis patients and new strategies to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.
