The effect of service-learning approach on gaining responsibility and environmental awareness: Value of the month example

The aim of this research is to examine the effect of service-learning approach on gaining responsibility and environmental awareness. For this purpose, the service-learning approach was used in the value of month activities in secondary education institutions and this way environmental awareness and responsibility values were tried to be gained. Mixed method in which qualitative and quantitative data are used together was used in research. In the quantitative dimension of study a single group pre-test post- test experimental design was used. İn the qualitative dimension of research the instrumental case study design was used to support the data. The Research was carried out at Fatih High School in Batman province in 2021-2022 academic year. 82 students studying in 9., 10., 11. ve 12. classes participated in the research. "Attitude toward Environmental" and İndividual and Social Responsibility " scale were used to collect the quantitative data of study. Semi-structured interview form developed by researcher was used as qualitative data collection tool. İn the analysis of quantitative data, dependent groups t test was applied. The data obtained from the interview form used in the qualitative dimension of research were subjected to content analysis and descriptive analysis. As a result of research, it was determined that approach of learning by serving in the value of month activities increased the students awareness of responsibility and environment. As a result of qualitative findings, it was determined that the students became aware of environmental problems, learned responsibilities towards environmental problems, fulfilled responsibilities and were satisfied with issue.
