Abstract (EN)

VI ABSTRACT MA THESIS READING STRATEGIES EMPLOYED BY ELT LEARNERS AT ADVANCED LEVEL TU?BAGÜRSES Supervisor Prof Dr. Kemalettin Yiğiter 2002-PAGE: 134 Jury: Prof. Dr. Kemalettin Yİ?İTER Assoc. Pro£ Dr. Mehmet TAKKAÇ Asst Prof. Dr. Selma ELYILDIRJM This thesis is designed to identify what strategies good readers employ in pre-, during- and post- reading stages in classroom language learning. The underlying reason is the lack of clarification of the difference in strategy use by both good and poor readers at advanced level through the Three Phase Approach in reading. In this thesis, firstly general information about schema theory, reading processes and the rationale of pre-, during- and post- reading phases have been presented. Likewise, specific reading strategies and reading, language skills have been examined. Moreover, some recommendations and sample lesson plans have been suggested for language teachers. The preparatory ELT students at Atatürk University were administered an inventory of strategy use during their in-classroom reading studies. Later, they were given a final (achievement) test which consisted of grammar, writing, vocabulary and reading. The data were analysed through a percentage study. It was reported in the study that good readers differed in strategies used in pre-, during and post reading phase. This study will, therefore, improve the view and focus of language teachers on the use of reading strategies and they will be more aware of the reading strategies of good readers through the Three Phase approach.
