The investigation of attainment level of elemantary education 5th grade social studies curriculum's aims according to some variables

vm ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to determine to what extent the goals of the 5& grade social studies course at elementary schools have been achieved, and to study the effects of students' genders, socio-economic status, teachers' genders; experience, education, time spent with the same group of students, teachers' ages, to what extent teachers are effective on the realization of the goals. The data of the survey type descriptive research were collected through 'The Investigation Of Attainment Level Of Elementary Education 5* Grade Social Studies Curriculum's Aims According To Some Variables", developed by the researcher, "Teacher Evaluation Scale" and "Personal Information Form". The research was conducted in the 2001-2002 Academic Year in İzmir. The sample of 1233 fifth graders and 37 teachers in 28 public and private schools of low, medium and high economic status. The data were analyzed with the programs Excel and SPSS to calculate the Arithmetic Mean, Standard Deviation, Percentages and in addition, the statistical analyses t Test, Factors, Variance, Correlation and Reliability were also carried out The research has discerned that the goals of the Social Studies course have been partially achieved, that the achievement levels do not vary significantly in terms of students' genders but in terms of the socio-economic levels of the schools, teachers' genders, teachers' experience, the types of schools teachers have graduated form, time teachers have spent with the same group of students and teachers' ages. According to students' evaluations, teachers are effective enough, and there is a significant correlation between to what extent the goals have been achieved and the effectiveness levels of the teachers.IX After all, some suggestions have been made as to how goals of the fifth grade Social Studies course can be better achieved and what researchers interested in this field might do in the future.
