The Study of learning the concepts in the unit of one country one flag' from social studies lesson of 5th grades in the aspects of some parameters

Prof. Dr. Mahinur KARATAŞ COŞKUNJune 2007, 163 pageIt is aimed in this research to determine the levels of the students and mistakesthat they do in learning the following concepts that of ?state, national sovereignty,republic, democracy, constitution, law, central administration, local administration andcitizenship? of which are mentioned in the unit ?One Country One Flag? included inSocial Studies Program, 5th Grades? Class Curriculum that has been practised on thenational concept in 2005-2006 education year. The study consists of 5 chapters underthe titles of Abstract, theoretical explanations and related explanations, method, findingsand comments, results and suggestions.The research is a descriptive study in survey model. The subject group of theresearch consists of 8 branches of 6th grades which were selected from private and stateprimary schools in Seyhan district, Adana, through the means of ?critical situationillustrating? method.As the data collection tools, ?Socio-Economical Level Measure, (SED)?designed by Bacanlı (1997), 51 item ?Conceptual Success Test? prepared by theresearcher and also ?Meeting Form? prepared by the researcher were used. Single -parametrical analyses such as frequency distribution, percentage distribution,arithmetical average, median, mod, width, variability and standard deviation, werestudied while analyzing the data gathered from the Level Measure and ConceptualSuccess Test; besides, by applying variability analyses such as t analyses and F analysesto the parameters, we looked on the meaningfulness and level of related changesbetween the environments. The written data collected through the meetings werevianalyzed through content analyses; also, transformed into qualitatively data throughpercentage and frequency of words. The data that was achieved from the results of theresearch may be summarized as follows:According to the results of the conceptual success test consisting of 51questions; %91.6 of the students? successes are below %50, %8.4 of the remainder isbetween %50 and % 60, there has been no student achieving a success rate over % 60. Ithas been found that conceptual success test marks have not shown a differenceaccording to sex; however, they have differentiations considering the socio- economicallevels.It was observed that the students? recalling (% 36.62), understanding (%36.55) and application (% 33.69) marks were low; that students? recalling,understanding and application marks had not pointed any differentiations according tosex; however, that the marks have differed according to the socio- economical levels;specially, recalling, understanding and application marks have changed positively andexpressively.The students? success on each concept was analyzed and the followingranging was found out from the concept on which the students were most successful tothe least one: citizenship, national sovereignty, democracy, local administration,republic, state, constitution, central administration, and law.It was clearly determined that the students could not exactly define of theconcepts in the scope of the research and that they did not know about features of theconcepts, leading concepts and about the specific concepts. It was seen that they havenot wholly comprehended the concepts; and some kinds of knowledge they had onspeciality, sort and far-related sort of features consisted of wrong images, and that?swhy, the students could not categorize correctly.Key words: Social Studies Program, Concept Learning Levels, Concept Analysis
