Evaluation of the activities in the social studies students?workbooks in terms of creative thinking skills

The aim of this research is to evaluate the activities in the students?workbooks of primary school social studies course in terms of creative thinking skills.This research has both qualitative and quantitative attributes. The sample of this study were the two primary schools in the centre of Adana. 22 students? workbooks from the fourth grade and 22 students? workbooks from fifth grade were defined for their qualitative attributes and then rated using a researcher-developed instrument, the Creative Activities Rating Scale (CARS) in three dimensions as Fluency, Flexiblity and Originality as stated by the Torrance for this study. Further, 11 primary school teachers from fourth grade and fifth grade were interviewed by the researcher. ANOVA was used to evaulate the collected data from Creative Activities Rating Scale. Also, content analysis technique was used to analyze and interpret the document analysis of the students? workbooks and the interviews of primary school teachers.The research findings indicate that the activities named ?Brave Soldiers? and ?Writing A Story? were more effective than the others in the workbooks of the fourth grade students for three dimensions as Fluency, Flexiblity and Originality of creativity. The activities named ?The Money? and ?Looking into the Photograph? were seen more effective than the others in the workbooks of the fourth grade students for two dimensions as Fluency and Flexiblity of creativity.The activity named ?You Are a Scientist? was seen more effective than the others in the workbooks of the fifth grade students for three dimensions as Fluency, Flexiblity and Originality of creativity. The activity named ?Photographs? was seen more effective than the others in the workbooks of the fourth grade students for two dimensions as Fluency and Flexiblity of creativity. The activity named ?Shadow Play? was seen more effective than the others in the workbooks of the fifth grade students for two dimensions as Fluency and Originality of creativity. The activities named ?Going to the Past?, ?What Can We Do?? and ?If You Were A Prime Minister? were seen more effective than the others in the workbooks of the fourth grade students for one dimension as Flexiblity of creativity.According to the results of the research, teachers interviewed explained problems that the time of lessons and subjects, absence of materials, crowded class size, ruling out different levels of students learning, not comprehended activities by teachers and students, could make curriculum inefficient for developing creative thinking skills. They revealed suggestions for these topics and declared their positively approaches for the new curriculum.Keywords: Creative Thinking, Social Studies Teaching, Activities, Students? Workbooks.
