An examination of primary school counselors' consultation with families

Abstract (EN)

This research aimed to examine school counselors' consultation with families. The study group consisted of 20 volunteer school counselors working at the primary school in the district of Şahinbey in Gaziantep province in the 2021-2022 academic year.Phenomenological design was used in the research.Data were collected with a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher. The data obtained through semi-structured interviews from the school counselors were analyzed using content analysis. According to the results of the study, school counselors found that the consultation services to be important and necessary, that the given education and in-service training for the consultation were inadequate, and that the in-service training needed.In addition, they frequently work on issues and problems related to parental attitudes,school success,peer bullying, students with special educational needs, family communication, behavioral problems, and the pandemic in the consultation with families.The results showed that familiesgot benefits from the consultation activities.Other results show that school counselors often use methods such as individual interviews, seminar when they do family consultations, and that the majority of school counselors have received sufficient support from the teachers and school principlas on consultation conducted with family members.
