Özet (EN)
110 ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to re-form a new syllabus which is in parallel to the existing one in order to help the engineering students in the Preparatory School of Gazi University to overcome the difficulties that they may encounter later during those faculty courses in their field of study which are taught in English. To realize this aim, the needs of the students at the Faculty of Engineering have been specified. The interpretation of the needs analysis have shown that after the Preparatory School, some academic skills will be needed by the engineering students to succeed in and to follow a number of their courses in their field of study taught in English. Thus, the academic skills such as note-taking, summarizing, writing a report, reading for specific information and the like have been integrated within the existing Preparatory Class syllabus. The first chapter gives a general background to the study and states its aim and the scope and makes some assumptions about it. The second chapter deals with the definitions of the terms 'syllabus' and 'curriculum'. Also, the types of and shapes of syllabuses have been summarized. In chapter three the present system has been discussed. The student's questionnaire and the teacher interview have been analyzed and interpreted in chapter four. The suggested syllabus has been presented in chapter five. In the sixth chapter a brief summary has been given.
