Abstract (EN)
Travel books play an important role in shedding light on the history, culture and art of a society as much as archival documents. In this sense, not only in the disciplines such as history, literature and geography, but also in social disciplines such as art and cultural history are among the sources used. The travelogues written and illustrated by Mary Adelaide Walker, who shed light on the social and cultural life of the Ottoman Empire, evaluated the prejudiced approach of the Western world towards the East from the perspective of a woman traveler. In this thesis, the impressions of the traveler-painter Mary Adelaide Walker, who lived in the Ottoman lands, the language used in her written and visual narratives and the information she gave are emphasized. In this context, important and detailed information conveyed by Walker about the life style of Turkish society, his impressions of life and cultural assets in the cities he visited, were identified as sources having historical and cultural documents.
