Intermittan ekzotropyada simetrik ve asimetrik cerrahi yaklaşimlarin karşilaştirilmasi

In this study, we aimed to evaluate long-term results and factors affecting the success of symmetric (bilateral lateral rectus recession) and asymmetric (unilateral medial rectus resection and lateral rectus recession) surgical treatment of patients with a diagnosis of intermittent exotropia (EX).Ninety three patients who applied to the hospital with a diagnosis of intermittent EX were taken as samples. 47 patients received symmetric surgical treatment, while 43 received asymmetric and the other three were treated for other surgical methods. During the preoperative follow-up of patients, a cycloplegic refraction examination and accordingly necessary refraction correction was accomplished. In the last examination during postperative 1 year visit, a deviation ± 10PD was taken as success.Fifty (53.8%) were female and 43 (46.2%) were male. It was observed that of 31 (33.3%) patients 3 (3.2%) had prematurity, 6 (6.4%) had trauma, 3 (3.2%), convulsions, and 19 (20.4%) had a family history of squint. No statistically significant difference was observed between symmetric and asymmetric surgical treatment for postoperative 1st day, 1st month and 6th month when evaluating postoperative distance deviation, and between postoperative 1st day, 1st month and 6th month when evaluating nearness deviation (p> 0.05). Improvements in distance deviation at the 1st year and nearness deviation both at the 6th month and 1st year in asymmetrical surgery was better than that of symmetrical surgery. This difference was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05).Although symmetric and asymmetric surgical methods are used in the treatment of intermittent EX safely and frequently, it was observed that long-term efficiency of asymmetric surgery was higher than that of symmetric surgery. However, it was concluded that the efficiency rate for the short term was not high enough to determine success rate.Key Words: Intermittent Exotropia, Symmetric Surgery, Asymmetric Surgery.
