Understanding the internet gaming disorder: Its associations with video game genre, perceived stress, metacognitions, coping skills, and procrastination

The current study investigates predictors of internet gaming disorder and explores the relationship between video game genres and internet gaming disorder. Participants (1466) were recruited through various social media platforms and the inclusion criteria were being over 18 and to play video games at least one time a week. Participants filled the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale Short Form, Metacognitions about Online Gaming Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Tuckman Procrastination Scale, Cognitive Attentional Syndrome 1 Scale, and Coping Styles Scale-Brief Form. Negative metacognitions, perceived stress, positive metacognitions, procrastination, cognitive attentional syndrome, mental disengagement-denial, and substance use significantly predicted higher internet gaming disorder scores. Battle Royale, Role-playing, Adventure, Action-adventure, Shooter, Survival, Platform, Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, and Massive Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game genres were found to be positively correlated with internet gaming disorder scores. In the final section, findings were discussed; limitations, further study recommendations, and clinical implications were elaborated on. In conclusion, this study contributed to the literature on internet gaming disorder by examining predictors and video game genre preferences in the Turkish population.
