Workaholism and burnout syndrome relation: A field research on the lawyers and academicians

The main purpose of this study is to determine the relations between workaholism and the subdimensionsof the workaholism such as motivation for working, commitment for working and therelations between the pleasure of working and the burnout syndrome and the relations between theemotional burnout, desensitization and personal success and workaholism.For this purpose, the samples among the lawyers working in Istanbul and the academicians, facultymembers and researchers working in Istanbul University and Istanbul AydınUniversity were chosenas the research population. Questionnaire form was utilized as the data gathering method during theresearch. The data was collected by implementing the workaholism scale developed by Spence andRobbins and by implementing the Maslach burnout scale developed by Maslach.In the first part of the study general conceptual framework of the workaholism and burnoutsyndrome was explained and in the second part, the method was given place and field researchconducted on workaholism and burnout syndrome was explained. In the third part, workaholism andburnout syndrome was discussed in the light of findings and bibliography and annexes were givenfinally.The sampling was identified according to its demographic variables and the workaholism andburnout levels of the sampling were determined accordingly. It was seen that the increase in theworkaholism level increased the burnout syndrome as a whole and at the same time it increased theemotional burnout, desensitization and personal success as being the sub?dimensions of the burnoutsyndrome. Moreover it was seen that there is a linear relationship between the burnout syndromeand pleasure of working, motivation for working and commitment for working.
