Research on Kamuran Şipal's literary work in the context of autofiction

The concept of autofiction, which has been discussed since the early 1980s and is a product of the postmodern era, emerged for the first time with Serge Doubrovsky's publication of the novel "Fils," where the term was featured on the cover. Autofiction can be described as a variation of autobiographical narrative genre where the author makes a contract with the reader to tell their life story truthfully and chronologically. Unlike traditional autobiographies, autofiction allows authors to portray fragmented and discontinuous periods of their lives that have left an imprint on them, emphasizing self-narratives and introspection, which became increasingly significant in the 20th century. It combines the author's own life story with fictional elements, thus creating a postmodern narrative style. The theoretical section of this study discusses the emergence and development of autofiction, attempts to define its boundaries, and then examines autofiction in the works of the author and translator Kamuran Şipal. Through an analysis of Kamuran Şipal's works, commonalities in characters, settings, and plot structures are explored, along with subtle clues placed by the author and verifiable details about the author's own life embedded within the works. These aspects demonstrate that Şipal's works are fundamentally grounded in her own life experiences while blending them with fiction to produce works within the context of autofiction, a product of postmodern narrative style.
