The Barak kilims in the region of Kaş (Antalya)

Within the scope of this study, solely the development of Barak weaving in Kaş region is evaluated, which is one of the most significant weaving cultures in Anatolia. This thesis is composed by the following chapters: "Introduction", "Catalogue", "A Short Story of the Barak Turkmen History and its Geography", "A Short Story of the Flat-weaving in Turkish Anatolia (Kilim, Cicim, Sumak)", "Characteristics of the Technic and Composition of the Barak Kilims in the Region of Kaş". In the introduction the definition, purpose, delimitation of the thesis project, along with the method of research, the related literature sources, as well as a brief history of the district of Kaş are presented. The catalogue introduces the characteristics of the Kilims that have been taken in consideration during the research. The chapter "A Short Story of the Barak Türkmen History and its Geography" gives valuable information about the identity, historical development and settlements of the Barak Turkmen in Kaş. The chapter "A Short Story of the Flat-weaving in Turkish Anatolia (Kilim, Cicim, Sumak)" emphasises the history and the development of the weaving. The third chapter deals with the technical and compositional features and the information obtained during the project's field research in the region of Kaş; materials and handwork, paint and its hand preparation, quality and weaving tools are also presented. The Barak kilim textiles are divided into groups according to their kind. In the conclusions, the Barak kilims studied in the catalogue are examined within their own context and are also compared with examples of kilims woven in different regions.
