ABSTRACTMSc THESISTHE EFFECTS OF ESSENTIAL OIL OF OREGANO OIL (Origanum vulgare) AND BLACK SEED OIL (Nigella sativa), ON TRUE DIGESTIBILTY OF DRY MATTER, ORGANIC MATTER AND NDF in BARLEY, SOYBEAN MEAL AND WHEAT STRAWYücel YILMAZDEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SCIENCEINSTITUE OF NATUREL AND APPLIED SCIENCESUNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVASupervisor: Prof. Dr. Murat GÖRGÜLÜYear:2009, Pages 31Jury:Prof. Dr. Murat GÖRGÜLÜAssoc. Prof.Dr. Ahmet ŞAHİNThe aim of the study was to determine the effects of essential oils of black seed and oregano on true dry matter (IVDMD), organic matter (IVOMD) and NDF digestibility (IVNDFD) of barley, soybean meal and wheat straw. True digestibilities were determined in ANKOM Daisy Incubator by supplying rumen liquor from three infertile Holstein cows. The study was carried out in a completely randomised design in 2 (essential oil) x 3 (dose) factorial arrangement. Barley and soybean meal were incubated 24 h. and wheat straw was incubated in 48 h. 0, 50, 100, 150 ppm doses were tested for both essential oils.Essential oils affected IVDMD, IVOMD and IVNDFD of soybean meal and wheat straw (P<0.05). Oregano oil decreased IVOMD and IVNDFD of wheat straw and soybean meal compared to black seed oil. Barley IVDMD, IVOMD and IVNDFD were not affected (P<0.05) by essential oil sources.Dose effect was not important for wheat straw IVDMD (P>0.05) but 50 ppm doses increased IVNDFD and IVOMD of wheat straw (P<0.05). IVDMD, IVOMD and IVNDFD of barley and soybean meal were not affected (P<0.05) by does of essential oils. Essential oil x dose interactions for wheat straw IVNDFD and IVOMD were significant (P<0.05). IVNDFD and IVOMD were increased by increase in dose of black seed but decreased by increase in dose of oregano oil. Similarly soybean IVDMD, IVOMD and IVNDFD were increased by 50 and 100 ppm black seed oil, but decreased by the same dose of oregano oil.The results revealed that black seed essential oil may increase ruminal degradability of rumen undegradable sources and oregano essential oil may limit highly rumen degradable protein sources to improve nitrogen utilization in the rumen.Key words: Essential oil, black seed, oregano oil, dose, digestibility
