The right to the city and social movements: A comparative assessment

The cities appear differently defined and developing places since the beginning of humanity.The cities where people mostly live together,have become places where individual or collective demands come up frequently.Along with the increase in the competence on the city,the idea of "the right to the city" was used by Henri Lefebvre right before the uprising of Paris in 1968.By setting the image of the city as the primary focus of the citizen,the idea of "the right to city" identified the term with its intrinsic value and was interpreted by the Marksist theoreticians. The changes occured in the communal living in the late 1960s encouraged people to unite in line with their purposes and goals.By organizing the people around certain factors,this unity caused some social movements to emerge.The social movements can be located differently with regard to the conditions of the period in which they emerge and the characteristics they have.In this study,the emergence of the idea of "the right to city" that has obtained a more apperent qualification and the development processes of the social movements will be examined and then certain examples on the basis of different countries will be discussed.
