Social cultural spatial transformation in the context of urban identity: Tavukçu neighborhood

The main subject of this research is the social, cultural and spatial transformation of the Tavukçu Neighborhood of the city of Kayseri, which has been the focal point of many cultures and civilizations throughout history in Anatolia and one of the important centers for Christianity, in the context of urban identity. Tavukçu Neighborhood is a part of the city that has a special place in the history and physical structure of Kayseri. Kayseri is a sub-region with rich identity elements that exist within the framework of historical data and original within its upper identity. In the study, the social, cultural and spatial changes that the Tavukçu Neighborhood has experienced from past to present have been examined and the identity elements acquired in the city memory of Kayseri have been mentioned. First of all, the concepts of "City, Urban Identity" were mentioned and social, cultural and spatial transformations were emphasized. Then, successful studies from the world and Turkey in areas with similar characteristics to the Tavukçu Neighborhood were examined. Then, the physical features, history, cultural and natural assets of the Tavukçu Neighborhood were examined and the reasons for privatization of the Tavukçu Neighborhood within the City of Kayseri were examined. Especially in order to better understand the spatial transformation, the spatial organization and plan layout of the Tavukçu Neighborhood has been examined. In the same section, there are studies that have been done in the past or that are still ongoing. The concepts of the city and urban identity have been examined in terms of Tavukçu Mahallesi, and the social, cultural and spatial changes experienced by the area and the results of the transformation have been discussed. Within the scope of the study, he actively participated in the transformation studies in the field since 2003; In-depth interviews were conducted with 4 people whose titles are architects, art historians and restorers, and five tradesmen who have been operating for many years on the outer periphery of the area. The findings show that the Tavukçu Neighborhood lost its urban identity during the process and the transformation efforts in the neighborhood were unsuccessful. In the study, the factors behind the failure of the transformation were questioned. It is seen that the success of the studies in the urban sites depends on the analysis of the area before the works begin, considering the area together with its environment and taking into account the requests/suggestions of the users.
