Özet (EN)
The main cause of periodontal diseases is microbial dental plaque. Individuals' ability to control dental plaque effectively is a prerequisite for obtaining and maintaining a healthy periodontium. Therefore, it is very important to inform and motivate the individuals to brush their teeth and to use interdental cleaning agents regularly. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of oral hygiene motivation method using a personalized three-dimensional gingival recession model. A total of 84 patients (48 female and 36 male) who were diagnozed as gingivitis and were systemically healthy, aged between 18 and 60, and had at least 12 years of education were included in our study. Patients were divided into three groups: Traditional Method (TM; n=28), Three Dimensional Animation (TDA; n=28), and Periodontal Disease Prediction (PDP; n=28). Before starting the study, the level of Periodontal Knowledge in each subject was determined via periodontal knowledge questionnaire (PKQ) and compared between the groups. Rustogi modified navy plaque index (RMNPI), gingival index (GI) and papillary bleeding index (PBI) were measured before the initial periodontal treatment and repeated at 6th week to evaluate the effectiveness of individual oral hygiene motivation. Dental treatment motivation scale (DTMS) was used to measure the intrinsic, extrinsic and total motivation levels of each patient. Data were analysed using SPSS programme and p<0.05 was set as statistically significant. When the RMNPI and GI scores were compared between the groups, there was no significant difference between the TM and TDA groups (p>0.05), while the PDP group showed a greater decrease than the other two groups (p<0.05). The alteration in PBI was not significant between the groups (p>0.05). All the clinical parameters were decreased in each group compared to the baseline (p>0.05). When the motivation levels of the patients were evaluated, while the total motivation values in all groups increased compared to the baseline, the increase in extrinsic motivation in the PDP group was higher than in the other two groups (p>0.05). Oral hygiene education using personalized three-dimensional models can be effective in increasing the oral hygiene motivation and compliance of individuals to periodontal treatment. KEYWORDS: oral hygiene motivation, three dimensional image, microbial dental plaque, gingival recession.
