Retrospective evaluation of demographic, clinical and histopatological features of colon polyps

Colon polyps generally refer to swellings that develop from the colon mucosa to the lumen. While they usually do not cause a complaint, they may rarely cause abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, intussusception and intestinal obstruction. While the majority of polyps show benign haracteristics, some of them have been found to be associated with the development of cancer. Colon polyps are considered to be precursors of colorectal cancer. The aim of our study is to retrospectively evaluate colon polyps in patients who underwent endoscopic polypectomy between January 2015 and April 2021, to investigate their frequency, size, localization, demographic characteristics and relationship with habits, and to shed light on our clinical practice. In our study, 638 patients older than 18 years of age who were found to have colon polyps in Bursa Uludağ University Medical Faculty Hospital between 2015-2021 were examined. Because the data of 107 patients could not be reached, these patients were excluded from our study. In our study, polyps increased with age, the most common 0-5 mm in size, most of the polyps are pedunculated and the most common in the rectosigmoid region.It has been seen in accordance with the literatüre. Our study was retrospective and was conducted with a relatively small number of patients. For this reason, it would be appropriate to conduct a randomized prospective study involving a much larger number of patients in order to draw more precise results that will affect current clinical practice on the identified issues.
