Abstract (EN)

Maritime transportation is the most cost effective transportation mode when it is examined in terms of unit transportation cost over long distances. Container transportation, first emerged in the 1950s, continues to expand day by day. It is utmost important that the operations carried out in container terminals are done in time and without any errors regarding to the cost minimization, turn-around/dwell time minimization and operational safety issues in ports. In this sense, the efficiency measurements of the ports are of great importance. Efficiency analysis in container terminals has been frequently studied in the last thirty years, especially for foreign ports. As a non-parametric method, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is widely used in the literature. When the similar studies in the literature are examined, it is seen that many input and output variables have been utilized in DEA analysis. Seven input and one output variables are determined considering the fact of data availability for the efficiency analysis of all the container terminals operating in Turkey. Input variables are determined as; terminal area, number of berths, berth length, number of ship to shore cranes, number of handling equipments in container stacking area, port draft depth and number of port employees. The output variable is selected as the annual container throughput and efficiency analyzes were performed. The aim of this study is measuring and comparing the efficiencies of 26 ports capable of handling containerized cargo in Turkey by Data Envelopment Analysis method. Findings of the study and potential improvement points are intended to be a conductor for future plans of the ports. According to the findings of the study, it has been concluded that Marport, Mersin MIP, Asyaport and Kumport container terminals are relatively efficient among the evaluated terminals. However, Trabzon, Derince Safiport and Akcansa Ambarli container terminals have been identified as the least efficient terminals.
