The role of individualistic perception in the evaluation of residental immediate environment

Starting by the first half of the 20 th century, the industrial movement and periods proceeding it, inevitably effected the living environments on the track of a rapid change, infact, originated without or against the control and effect of its users. Consquently this process ended up with the estrangement of the individuals to their own environments. After observing that strong effect of living environments over the individuals, it is essential to determine the qualifications of a habitable environment. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the physical qualities of living environments through perception and to determine the qualifications of a habitable environment regarding the human-environment relationship as bases. There is a continous correlation between human and his environment where the human reshapes his environment to satisfy his needs, and the environment effects and directs the human in this act. As a result here in the evaluation of living environment human-environment relationship is considered as fundamentals. Regarding perception as the instrument of human's relationship with his environment, the concept of environmet is investigated primarily in this studty and then the concept of perception is searched through its processes of visualization and realization. Definetely, the evaluation process of the environment does not simply end by its perception. The true conception of environment; thus an environmental image, is achieved by the individual only after collectingXII necessary perceptual dâtâ and evaluating it to cognition maps. At the end of this evaluation process the individual develops a behavioral attitude towards his environment, the term of this attitude is infact directly related with the caracteristics of the observer since perception is an individualistic process. In this study, the qualifications of a habitable environment is discussed through ah investigation of resident il near surroundings under the light of above considerations, and a case study is held to evaluate the near surroundings by the Users. Depanding oh the data provided in the case study, some clues that could direct the process of architectural design are obtained. Some of the results considered primarily important are given below â) Eor easy perception, interpretation and cognition the living environment should achieve the concepts of identity, structure and meaning. b) Living environments are artificial formations, however their correlations With hatural environments should definetely be provided. c) the aim and purpose of architectural design is not only to satisfy the necessity of sheltering but also to provide the individuals social unity With his environment, bue to this fact, especially the Urban outdoor spaces should be equipt with suitable equipment. this results are infact important not only for the satisfaction of the individuals from their own environments, but also for evaluation of a qualified environment in the sence of identitiy and meaning, besides they are essential for the formation of habitable urban settlements.
