Children in need of protection: A qualitative research on the child homes in Ankara

In our country, the institional care has been known for many years as a common service for caring and protection of children in need of protection. The institional care provides for the basic needs such as nutrition, clothing and shelter, yet it has been understood that it doesn't have the similarity with family atmosphere and provide sufficiently cognitive, psychological and social needs. For the purpose of overcoming the negative consequences of the institional care for children's development, child home service has been come up as a new service model for children in need of protection. In addition to providing the physical needs of children, the aim of this new model is to bring up children being entegrated to society, viable, hopeful for future and having attainment that needs in every sphere of life and so this model contributes to bring up healthy person who has improved themselves in terms of cognitive, social and psychological. The child home service began with pilot scheme in 2000 and it achieved the target positive results. So the child home service has began to be impemented for children in need of protection since 2005. When the child has no chance to access from family-based care options, the child home service is a compulsory service that is preferred and considered among the other institional care services. The institional care has carried disavantage circumstance and at the result of negative impact there has been a transition to the child home service. In this study, it is researched that the child home service differs from the institional care in which position after the transition and satistfy with the target or not. And also this study intends to present the general overwiew of children about their opinions and approach to child home services. Consequently, it is understood that the child home service provides the physical needs such as nutrition, clothing and shelter, the needs of educate and health, the emotional needs such as attention, affection, value, the social needs like communication with homemates and neighbours. It is also revealed that the children achieve the certain attainment which needs in their future life. It is certain that this service provides all kinds of opportunities. But it is considered that the child home isn't like family atmosphere as emotional bond except from phsical similarity and the opinions of the children indicates that it is insufficient to compensate for their own family.
