A brief history of the Etruscans

The Etruscans developed in Central Italy between the 8th and 1st centuries BC, establishing commercial, political, military, and cultural relationships with their neighbors. As a result of these interactions, they both influenced and were influenced by their surroundings. Ancient authors discussed this culture from various perspectives in their works. The information gathered from these works constitutes the first part of our study. Our aim has been to compile the observations made by their contemporaries and successors in the past, and to try to explain and understand the points that can be discussed. Some of the traces the Etruscans left on the stage of history are their monumental structures, tombs, and city walls. Another group includes remains with epigraphic value, texts inscribed on various objects such as cloth, stone, or metal plates, tomb paintings, various decorative items, jewelry, and kitchen utensils that help to illuminate daily life. The cultural traces they left behind were aspects not present in their peers during the early centuries of the Roman Empire, such as various engineering skills, the effort to understand the future and God through divination, the system of rewarding military success, or the use of music in the army. The participatory position of women in society was one of the aspects that particularly distinguished the Etruscans from other civilizations. Politically, it should be noted that there were long periods when kings of Etruscan origin ruled in Rome. Despite this, the Etruscans did not fight against the Roman Empire by establishing a single political state; they continued their lives as independent city-states, and as these city-states one by one came under Roman rule, they also disappeared from the stage of history. The mysterious aspects of the Etruscans, whose origins are still debated, may be understood more clearly in the not-too-distant future with genetic research and new archaeological findings.
