Abstract (EN)
This study aims to understand Late Bronze Age (LBA) Anatolian animal management strategies, especially those of cattle, adopted by the people of Kaymakçı through a close study of subsistence patterns and symbolic importance. Of specific interest is how economic practices contributed to and sustained ongoing daily life, such as choices in diet, the management of livestock (e.g., meat, dairy, and traction), and in turn shaped perceptions of power and prestige. The results of this study establish a baseline for further research in western Anatolian LBA animal management systems and provide a comparison of proximate LBA cattle cultures. The dataset from Kaymakçı provides a compelling example of targeted provisioning practices. This analysis shows that animal economies characterize Kaymakçı as a western Anatolian community that adopted strategic behaviors towards animals, especially cattle, in accordance with its culture, environment, and sociopolitical interests.
