Examination of alexithymia, emotional intelligence and psychological well-being levels of high school students with regard to various variables

Abstract (EN)

This study's aim is to reveal the relationship between alexithymia, emotional intelligence and psychological well-being levels. In addition, the effects of variables such as students' sex, age, sibling number, parental education levels or maternal employment status on alexithymia, emotional intelligence and psychological well-being levels were examined. 400 high school students who were from a high school and from Bursa are participated to the research. Also, according to identify students' socio-demographic characteristics, Personal Information Form and to evaluate variables, Toronto Alexithymia, Emotional Intelligence and Psychological Well-Being Scales were applied by researcher. Unpaired T Test, Anova and Correlation Analysis were used in the analysis of data. When the socio-demographic characteristics analyzed, female students have higher scores on interpersonal skill scale than male students; the participants whose family income is high, have higher scores of personal skills, interpersonal skills, harmony, positive impact, emotional intelligence (total score) and general mood than the participants whose family income is moderate and low. In addition, the scores of participants toronto alexithymia scale increase, students personal skills, general mood, interpersonal skills, positive effect, emotional intelligence (total score) and adaptation subscale scores decrease, the scores obtained from students toronto alexithymia scale increased, students scores on autonomy, environmental dominance, psychological well-being (total score), positive relationships with others, individual development, life goal and self-acceptance subscales were decreased and the scores obtained from the emotional intelligence scale of the participants increased, it was concluded that the scores obtained from the positive relationships with others, life purpose, autonomy, environmental dominance, self-acceptance, psychological well-being (total score) and individual development subscales were increasing In the discussion section, at the end of the research, suggestions for researchers, psychological consultants working on this field had been proposed on research findings.
