Associating self-esteem, temperament-character traits, and coping skills with compulsive buying and online compulsive buying behavior in patients with major depressive disorder

Purpose: In this study, it was aimed to investigate relation between compulsive buying/online compulsive buying and major depressive disorder, corelation between compulsive buying and online compulsive buying behaviour with depression severity, relation of compulsive buying by low self-esteem temperament-character feature, coping skills. Materials and Methods: The study included 106 patients, diagnosed with major depressive disorder according to the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and 98 healthy individuals, matched with patients group sociodemographically, have not any mental disorder who gave written consent. They were performed Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Compulsive Buying Scale, Compulsive Online Buying Scale, Coping Skills Behaviour Rating Scale, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, Temperament and Character Inventory. Same process was also performed for control group. Results: There are significant differentiations for sex, marital status and occupation between two groups. According to control group, depressive groups' Compulsive Buying Scale and Compulsive Online Buying Scale (KSAO, KCSO), Coping Skills Behaviour Rating Scale (COPE-R), Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RBSO) points, harm avoiding (HA), novelty seeking (NS), Perserevance (P) temperament's dimensions and self-directedness (S), cooperation (C) character's dimensions difference of total points were observed significantly important. They were established two model for determine direction and size of relations between Depression Severity(HDOT), coping skills (COPE-T), self-esteem (RBSO-T) and temperament-character dimensions (Figure 1 = Model 1 ve Figure 2= Model 2). Model-1 shown that depression severity does not have a direct effect on compulsive buying and this effect arises indirectly through self-esteem and coping skills. In model-2, The effect of depression severity on coping skills which observed in model-1 and significant impact of coping skills on compulsive buying have disappeared. Discussion: In this study, it was observed that depression severity did not have a direct effect on compulsive buying and online compulsive buying, but indirectly through self-esteem and coping skills. Considering temperament and character traits, the relationship between compulsive buying and self-esteem continues to maintain its importance, while the pathway about the effect of depression on coping and also coping on compulsive buying loses its importance. Compulsive buying behavior is observed in other psychiatric diseases or also exclusively, it seems to have an important place in the psychopathology of depression.
